Shocks are important because they give the driver and passengers in a 4x4 vehicle a comfortable ride by gently absorbing the uneven surfaces of the earth so that every little bump in the ground or street is not felt in the cab of the vehicle. Shocks are also important in an off-road setting because they keep the springs, both leaf and coil, under control by not allowing the springs to compress or extend too rapidly or too much in either direction.
